Masoud Shakarami

Playwright, Director & Actor

Masoud Shakarami was born in Tehran, Iran, in 1986. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in dramatic literature and has worked as a playwright, director and actor since 2006. Over that time he has been nominated for and won several awards as both playwright and actor.

His study has focused on mythology and mythological literature — the deep rivers of story that run beneath visible culture. This fascination with ancient form and contemporary reckoning informs all his theatrical work.

His play Have Colourful Dreams, Sir won first prize at the Fajr International Theatre Festival, one of the most prestigious theatre competitions in the world. Masoud's first English translation of the play was published by Prahran Publishing; a Spanish edition — Felices y Coloridos Sueños, Señor — followed. The play draws on the lyrical Ghazal tradition of 13th and 14th century Persian poets such as Saadi and Hafez, setting their meditation on love, separation, and surrender in a contemporary island fable.

Masoud has also worked as a screenwriter and director in short film, with his work appearing in international festivals through FilmFreeway.
